Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug — Ugra belongs to Urals Federal Okrug, and it is located in the central part of the Eastern Siberia. The area of Ugra is 534 800 sq. km. Population of the autonomous okrug as of early 2012 was 1 561 200 (i.e. the 3rd in Urals Federal Okrug, and the 28th in the Russian Federation population wise). This is the largest okrug in terms of population, the area of which is recognized as Far Northern district. The okrug features high level of urban development. The share of urban population as of early 2012 was 91.6%. Over 61% of the population of the autonomous okrug lives in mono-cities, 2 of which are the major cities of the region (Surgut and Nizhnevartovsk).
The okrug includes 106 municipal entities, including 13 urban okrugs (Kogalym, Langepas, Megion, Nefteyugansk, Nizhnevartovsk, Nyagan, Pokachi, Pyt-Yakh, Raduzhny, Surgut, Uray, Khanty-Mansiysk, Yugorsk); 9 municipal districts (Beloyarsky, Beryozovsky, Kondinsky, Nefteyugansky, Nizhnevartovsky, Oktyabrsky, Sovetsky, Surgutsky, Khanty-Mansiysky); 26 urban and 58 rural settlements.
